Liverpool bank HUGE profit on Sepp van den Berg as Dutch defender joins Brentford | OneFootball

Sepp van den Berg has completed an initial £20 million transfer to Brentford, bringing an end to one of Liverpool's longest-running summer transfer sagas.

The 22-year-old will now link up with fellow Anfield alumnus Fabio Carvalho, who has joined the Bees for an initial £27.5m.

Both are expected to be available for an immediate return to Anfield when Brentford travel to Merseyside for their Premier League fixture on Sunday afternoon.

Van den Berg has signed a five-year deal at Brentford and has earned a significant pay rise from the approximate £10,000 per week he was earning throughout his time at Liverpool.

The contract with the West London side also includes a 17.5 percent sell-on fee, meaning Liverpool could well cash in down the line should Van den Berg end up being sold on.

Brentford held off late interest from Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, who were also seeking to recruit Van den Berg for their backline.

Van den Berg wanted out of Liverpool

The Dutchman had expressed a clear desire to leave Anfield this summer, boldly stating that the club were hindering his progress.

He joined Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in 2019 for an initial £1.3m, potentially rising to £4.4m, and only managed four appearances in the first team throughout his five years at the club.

Van den Berg had loan spells at Preston, Schalke and Mainz, where he established himself in the Bundesliga last season.

Mainz, along with Wolfsburg and Leverkusen were seeking a deal for Van den Berg over the summer but were unwilling to meet Liverpool’s valuation.

He was taken on tour to the United States while his future was still shrouded in doubt and with defenders Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez arriving late back after Euro 2024.

Van den Berg was reported to have impressed new coach Arne Slot and his staff in pre-season testing but now his Liverpool spell is now at an end with the club banking a huge profit on another fringe player.
