Arne Slot will be hoping for no further setbacks before the Reds face Chelsea, with Alisson now sidelined

Alexis Mac Allister has joined up with the Argentina squad despite suffering an injury in Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Crystal Palace.

The former Brighton midfielder was substituted at half-time at Selhurst Park on Saturday, and, after the game, Reds boss Arne Slot said he was “in slight discomfort” with a groin injury before adding: “What is the exact situation – can he go to Argentina, can he go and play over there? That’s difficult for me to tell you now.”

It appears Mac Allister has quickly answered that question judging by a social media post of him touching down in Miami to meet up with his international teammates.

Argentina face Venezuela and Bolivia in a double-header of World Cup qualifiers this week, as the defending champions look to maintain their position at the top of the South American qualification table.

While Mac Allister’s fitness is uncertain, one Liverpool player who definitely will not be going on international duty is Alisson, who withdrew from the Brazil squad after sustaining a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace.

Slot said afterwards that he feared his first-choice goalkeeper would be out for “maybe a few weeks”, meaning he is likely to miss the Premier League leaders’ clash with Chelsea at Anfield on October 20.

No2 ‘keeper Caoimhin Kelleher will be expected back for that high-profile showdown, with third-choice Vitezslav Jaros having deputised off the bench for Alisson at Selhurst in a surprise debut.
