Liverpool came back with a vengeance in the second half, though, and they were level when Mohamed Salah poked the ball home from close-range in the 49th-minute following a wonderful pass from Divock Origi.

Then in the 69th-minute, the hosts completed the comeback to send their adoring fans inside Anfield wild.

And it was club captain Jordan Henderson who grabbed the goal in stunning fashion, the Englishman's strike from the edge of the box to make it 3-2 evoking memories of a prime Steven Gerrard.

Jurgen Klopp singled out ‘sensational striker’ Divock Origi for praise after Liverpool secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over AC Milan in the Champions League.

Belgium international Origi was handed a rare start for Liverpool on Wednesday night as Italian giants AC Milan visited Anfield.

The 26-year-old justified his place in the team with an assured performance, causing the Milan defence problems all evening and providing the assist for Mohamed Salah’s second-half equaliser.

Klopp was delighted by Liverpool’s ‘important’ victory and paid special tribute to Origi in his post-match press conference, insisting ‘people forget how good he is’.

‘He played a super game,’ Klopp said of Origi. ‘People forget how good he is. It is just difficult to get him in this team.

‘He’s a sensational striker who did really well. In the summer transfer window we all thought there would be a proper offer [for him], but obviously people don’t watch football enough.’

Klopp added: ‘We started incredibly well. We played a super, super game. An intense game but football wise as well.

‘We played in all the spaces we had to play and didn’t give them anything until… I’m not sure exactly. We got punished for it in the last few minutes of the first-half but it started earlier.

‘We got carried away by our own football. We didn’t keep it simple anymore, offensively and defensively we were not organised anymore.

‘But it did not feel like we cannot come back. It was clear that we had to immediately get back to how we started and then we scored wonderful goals, to be honest. Both were incredible.
