Alexis Mac Allister

There has perhaps not been a more prominent individual in the second half of a season than Alexis Mac Allister, especially under the guidance of Liverpool’s current and outgoing German manager, Jürgen Klopp. Following the new year’s move to a more attacking and destructive midfield position, the former Brighton man has been utterly sensational and unequalled in the entire Anfield group. When this evening’s game was looking precarious, the home managers decision to alter the game centred around facilitating what best suited the Argentina World Cup winner. For the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign, it has been clear that Ryan Gravenberch has struggled to immerse himself into the requirements of this team, despite so many opportunities to play his way into the first team elite. Tonight, against a poor bottom of the table team, the Anfield giants rested too heavily on their laurels and it was the 25-year-old contender for player of the year who took the game away from the Blades, before securing yet another man of the match award.

With now just eight games remaining in this season tantalising Premier League fixture list, Liverpool moved back to the summit of the table and now head to Old Trafford this Sunday afternoon for another titanic battle. Much of what is required will be catered for to ensure the more important players can deliver. With Trent Alexander Arnold and Alisson Becker still working their way back from injury, it was always going to need one or two individuals to step into the world class breach, to deliver moments and performances that could elevate the team. Tonight, against a dogmatic Sheffield United team, turmoil started to engulf Anfield as the game sat precariously at 1–1. In a campaign that demands leaders step forward, Alexis Mac Allister stood up and scored the all-important second Liverpool goal that sent his team on their way to victory. With control and determination restored to the middle ground after replacing Gravenberch at LCM, it showed that the decision by the manger to shift the 5ft 9inch player back into his favoured was correct.
