With that in mind, we compiled a list of five most legendary players who wore Inter’s blue-and-black shirt and contributed to the legacy of this extraordinary club:

1 – Javier Zanetti

The man atop of the list of all time appearances with Inter with unbelievable 854 games from 1995 to 2014, is an Argentinian-born footballer and is the most iconic player in the history of the club. While he only scored 12 goals over this time, he did find the net in the UEFA cup final against Lazio in 1998.

He played as a defender and defensive midfielder and was known for his versatility on the pitch as well as for incredible work ethic. With staggering 16 trophies during his Inter tenure, he experienced a lot of team success and was the team captain for more than a decade.

2 – Giuseppe Meazza

While some fans might complain that Meazza also played for cross-town rivals A.C. Milan, he undoubtedly made his greatest mark with Inter from 1927 to 1940. He played in 348 matches and scored 240 goals during that time, and was regarded as such a cerebral player that he was nicknamed ‘Il Genio’ (The Genius).

Meazza won three national titles with Inter and was the league’s best scorer three times. His contributions to the local football history are so great that the stadium where both of the Milan teams play today was named after him in 1980.

3 – Guiseppe Bergomi

Bergomi is one of the rare elite players who spent their entire careers with one club, as he played for Inter from 1979 to his retirement in 1999, appearing in 756 matches. Known by his nickname ‘Beppe’ by the media and the fans, this stout defender is widely considered one of the best Italian players at his position ever.

He won one national championship with Inter, but added three UEFA Cup crowns to his resume. Bergomi was also a team captain for both Inter and Italy, exemplifying the level of respect he elicited from his peers.

4 – Giacinto Facchetti

Another Inter lifer who never left the club, Facchetti played from 1960 to 1978, amassing 634 appearances and 75 goals. While he was a defender, he was dangerous when on the attack and would regularly threaten the opposing goal, foreshadowing modern two-way players.

Facchetti’s counterattacking style was an important component of the famous ‘Grande Inter’ team and its ‘catenaccio’ strategy. Facchetti was also noted for his fair play as he received only one red card in 18 years. After his retirement, he served in various front office role including the top job of club president.

5 – Giuseppe Baresi

With 16 years spent in Inter and a total of 559 appearances, Baresi deserves a place on this list of club’s most important players. He was a reliable defender and midfielder who anchored the team for a long time, won two Italian league titles, and was a captain from 1988 to 1992.

His career was spent in the shadow of his more famous brother Franco, who played for A.C. Milan and often faced Giuseppe in hotly contested match-ups. He remained with Inter after his playing days as a scout and coach, eventually becoming an assistant to Jose Mourihno in 2008.
