Lisandro Martinez: No surgery needed as Man United defender avoids ACL injury | OneFootball

Lisandro Martinez has not suffered an ACL injury after fears the Manchester United defender would be ruled out for a significant period.

Martinez was substituted after tangling with Vladimir Coufal during Manchester United’s 3-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday, with the centre-back in visible pain and several of his teammates concerned.

The Argentina international had recently returned to the team after missing much of the campaign with a foot problem, but fears over an anterior cruciate ligament injury have been allayed.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Manchester United sources have confirmed that the 26-year-old does not require surgery and the Red Devils hope Martinez will be fit to return after March’s international break.

The World Cup winner has a sprained collateral ligament, an issue that does not need an operation and will sideline the centre-back for weeks and not months.

Erik ten Hag had warned the issue did not ‘look good’ in his post-match press conference after Sunday’s game.

“It doesn’t look good,” he said.

“There is a bad concern. We have to wait for a few days for the diagnosis. He is very sad, very disappointed. We all feel really with him.

“First of all it is a personal disaster when it is really bad but also for the team it is really bad because he definitely brings us a lot.”

Ten Hag’s options to replace Martinez include Harry Maguire, who started at centre-back alongside Martinez against West Ham, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof. The latter duo were each introduced as substitutes at Old Trafford at the weekend.
