Angel Gomes would consider the possibility of returning to Manchester United should an opportunity arise.
Gomes, who was released by United in the summer of 2020, has managed to put his career back on track in France with Lille.
The Ligue 1 outfit placed their trust in the United academy graduate, who failed to impress the coaches at Carrington despite raising eyebrows with his technical ability in youth football.
It was the arrival of Paulo Fonseca that significantly turned around his fortunes at Lille. Initially, Gomes was seen as a number 10, but the Portuguese tactician utilised his technical security in possession and passing range by playing him as the deepest midfielder in his setup.
Since then, he has gone strength to strength, even managing to earn an England call-up for the Three Lions’ Nations League fixtures in September. He was equally composed in the middle of the park for his country, and impressively managed to complete more than 100 passes against Finland.
The 24-year-old’s resurgence in form has piqued the interest of several clubs, including Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United have also joined the race for their former talent.
In an interview with The Times, Gomes was asked about the possibility of returning to his boyhood club, and his response would please the United faithful.
“There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it’d be difficult to say no,” the England international said.
United, who are now on a five-game winless streak, have struggled to control games all season.
Irrespective of Erik ten Hag’s future, it is clear the Mancunian giants need a midfielder capable of dictating the tempo and pace of a game.
Gomes’ contract at Lille expires at the end of the campaign and should things remain unchanged, he will be available on a free transfer. As such, pursuing him would make both sporting and financial sense for United.
