With the domestic season now done and dusted, it’s time to take a look back at the standout performers in Ligue 1 during the course of the campaign.
So behold, in a 4-1-2-1-2 diamond formation, our Team of the Year…
The Marseille man bounced back from a disappointing spell at Crystal Palace to be Ligue 1’s best goalkeeper this season, keeping an impressive 12 clean sheets – the fourth highest in the division.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a breakout season this year as he made 33 appearances and scored two goals for a Nantes side which finished a respectable 9th. Lyon snapping him up on a free transfer already has the potential to go down as the signing of the summer.
Silva was imperious at the heart of the PSG defence as he helped the club to the fifth Ligue 1 title of his career, making 25 appearances and scoring one goal along the way.
And Silva’s compatriot Marquinhos was equally excellent alongside him too. That’s now four Ligue 1 winners’ medals for Marquinhos, and he’s still only 24.
You know you’ve been doing something right if you’re linked with a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League, and that’s exactly where Roussillon could be soon be headed. He was a big reason Montpellier ended the season with the second best defensive record in Ligue 1, and made a decent contribution going forward too.
The evergreen Brazilian made Marseille tick from his position at the base of midfield this season and at 30, he looks like he still has plenty to offer for a few more years yet.
Thauvin, too, was a big reason for Marseille’s top four finish this season, managing a very impressive 22 goals and 11 assists in Ligue 1. Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud says he wouldn’t sell the 25-year-old even for €80m, and we have no reason to disbelieve him.
For all the riches at their disposal, it was a kid who came through the academy who was one of PSG’s most impressive performers this season. The 23-year-old made 32 appearances in Ligue 1 this term and can consider himself hugely disappointed to have missed out on a place in France’s World Cup squad due to a slight late season dip in form.
The Lyon captain was the main driving force behind Les Gones’ qualification for the Champions League and it was only a matter of time before Europe’s biggest clubs started sniffing around. Jean-Michel Aulas certainly won’t let his prized possession go without a fight.
He came in for a world record transfer fee, he scored 19 goals in Ligue 1, assisted 15 others, and ended the season with three trophies despite missing a significant chunk of it through injury. It wasn’t a bad first year in France at all for Neymar and if rumours are to be believed, he won’t be hot footing it back to Spain just yet, which is great news for PSG bad news for the rest of Ligue 1.
The Uruguayan hit-man became PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer with the 48 goals he hit in all competitions this season, taking his tally to 170 for the club. He’s 31 now, but Cavani is far from finished.
