Game of the week: AS Monaco v Olympique de Marseille, Saturday 16:00 (UK)

Monaco’s recent return to form was blighted by two goalkeeping errors as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Brest last weekend. Granted, the Principality club were off-tune going forward and weren’t as incisive as we have seen them for much of their campaign, however, they will be disappointed to not have come away without at least one point from Brittany. Philipp Köhn is the main reason for that. The Swiss goalkeeper was at fault for both of Brest’s goals, including Mahdi Camara’s injury-time winner. It leaves Adi Hütter in a difficult position. He already opted to swap Radoslaw Majecki for Köhn just a matter of weeks ago after the Pole made a late error to gift Toulouse a point. Köhn took the place between the sticks as a default and has failed to provide guarantees. It would be logical if Monaco were looking to recruit a goalkeeper in the summer but in the meantime, it is a question of stick or twist.

Whilst there is a lack of assurances at the back, there is hope for Monaco going forward. Despite being blunt against Brest, Monaco’s record at home, especially that of top-scorer Mika Biereth, is very strong. Marseille can be exploited, too. Toulouse could – and should – have taken at least a point away from the Vélodrome. They will be rueing a string of missed chances. Saved by wonder goals from Mason Greenwood and then Adrien Rabiot, it is a result that papers over some cracks at Marseille but the defence is still a big worry. And it is not the kind of issue that can be resolved overnight. A tactical switch from Roberto De Zerbi does not look to be in the offing and so the alternative is conceding more goals. Goals seem a guarantee here but it just depends who can be more efficient when they come.
