GFFN editor-in-chief  Luke Entwistle and GFFN’s  Raphaël Jucobin face off in our Ligue 1 predictions competition. It’s three points for a correct score, two points for a correct score difference, and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?

Game of the week:  Olympique de Marseille v Paris Saint-Germain, Sunday 19:45 (UK)

In exactly what state will these two teams return? There is an interesting pretext to his Classique, with France facing Chile at Marseille’s home stadium, the Vélodrome, on Tuesday, just days before the tie. There are five PSG players, including Kylian Mbappé, who are in the France squad, and they are expected to be given a hostile reception. It is a chance for Les Phocéens to strike a mental blow ahead of Sunday’s game.

For Marseille, this is an opportunity to show a reaction, and against their fiercest rival no less. The omens are not positive. PSG have beaten Marseille 23 times in 30 fixtures since QSI took over the club back in 2011. Their recent record against Les Parisiens, especially in Ligue 1, is horrendous. Their final performance before the international break, against Rennes, does not inspire hope either. Marseille manager Jean-Louis Gasset stated that his side had “run out of fuel” during the match. His side were clearly struggling under the weight of a hectic schedule, which had Les Phocéens playing every three days due to their Europa League commitments. Will we see a revived Marseille against PSG? The motivation could hardly be higher, especially given the way they have forced their way back into European competition.

The question for PSG is what importance will they attribute to this fixture. With the title all-but secured, Ligue 1 football has felt like an afterthought for PSG for quite some time. Luís Enrique’s decision to rest – or drop – Mbappé in recent weeks and prepare for post-Mbappé PSG with a series of slightly more experimental line-ups is evidence of that. Les Parisiens still have a lot to play for, and the focus will certainly be on the Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, as well as the Coupe de France semi-final against Rennes. But a Classique is a Classique and bragging rights are important, as is a win just after the international break to set the tone for a run-in in which everything is to play for. It should be a thriller at the Vélodrome.
