Reigning Liga F champions Barcelona rounded off the calendar year with a successful trip to Tenerife. Like their rivals, Real Madrid claimed a 2-0 victory at the weekend to finish 2023 on a positive note.
Here, we will round up all of the action from the final round of Liga F fixtures before the winter break.
Atlético Madrid missed the chance to claim a fifth consecutive victory when they gave up a narrow lead in Saturday’s clash with Real Sociedad. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when Leicy Santos pounced on a rebound to guide the ball home.
They looked set to claim all three points until Synne Jensen found the net for a fourth consecutive game. The Norwegian forward latched onto Andreia Jacinto’s defence-splitting pass, before slotting into the bottom corner. The 70th-minute equaliser proved costly for Atleti, who dropped out of the top three.
While Atlético will go into the break in fifth place, Madrid CFF will head into the interval in fourth position following a third successive victory. Racheal Kundananji scored her fourth goal in three appearances to put her side ahead just before the midway point of the first period. Cristina Librán quickly added a second, sweeping the ball home from Luany’s cut-back. Madrid CFF ultimately held firm to record their first clean sheet since October 8th.
Levante bounced back from a defeat to Athletic Club to claim maximum points in their final match of 2023. After remaining patient, the hosts opened the scoring in the 73rd minute through Alba Redondo. A cross into the box bounced off Gabi Nunes and into the path of Redondo, who kept her composure to fire past Zala Meršnik.
Moments later, substitute Estela Carbonell drove home her first goal for the club to make sure of the win. Levante will head into the new year in third place, while Huelva remain bottom with just one point to their name.
Eibar took the lead in the 13th minute when Eidar Arana produced a deft header from Esperanza Pizarro’s near-post corner. Betis found an instant response, levelling the scoreline through Carla Armengol.
With the sides level at the break, the hosts netted two goals in four minutes to turn the game in their favour before the hour mark. Andrea Álvarez guided the ball home from Arana’s square pass to restore Eibar’s lead. Pizarro then added a third, cutting onto her left foot before sending a near-post strike past Paulo Vizozo.
Although Betis’ María Jiménez was sent off in the closing stages, the visitors still managed to pull a goal back through Julia Aguado. However, it was too little too late, as Eibar celebrated their third win of the season.
Barcelona continue their charge towards the Liga F title with a successful trip to Tenerife. Jonatan Giráldez, who has decided to leave the club at the end of the season, saw his side play out a goalless first half.
However, they subsequently hit the front within four minutes of the restart. Caroline Graham Hansen kept her cool from the penalty spot after Patri Gavira had been penalised for a handball infringement. Keira Walsh then found the bottom corner to register her first goal of the season and wrap up all three points in the process.
After losing four of their previous five competitive matches ahead of the weekend, Real Madrid would have been relieved to get back on track with a victory. Alberto Toril’s side had to wait until the second half for Claudia Zornoza to fire home after being teed up by Athenea del Castillo. Olga Carmona then kept her composure from the penalty spot to put the game beyond doubt.
As a result of the win, Real Madrid will go into 2024 in second place in the Liga F table, while Levante Las Planas are in eighth position.
Granada and Valencia looked set to play out a goalless draw in a game where both teams struck the woodwork. However, substitute Anita Marcos ultimately proved to be Valencia’s hero. The 23-year-old collected the ball from Jimena López, before she took a touch and fired high into the net to clinch the visitors’ first league victory since November 4th.
The final Liga F match of 2023 finished all square as Sevilla and Athletic Club played out a 1-1 draw at Estadio Jesús Navas. The Basque side opened the scoring in the 34th minute thanks to Naia Landaluze’s second goal of the season.
A deep free-kick found its way onto the head of the 23-year-old, who had the simple task of nodding in from close range. Despite receiving a setback, Sevilla fought back to level before the break. Athletic Club goalkeeper Mariasun Quiñones came racing out of her area in a bid to stop Toni Payne. However, the Nigeria international neatly evaded the challenge and sent the ball into an empty net.
