Liam Shaw decided to switch from England to Scotland last year by joining Celtic from Sheffield Wednesday but the player himself has admitted to The Daily Record that it wasn’t an easy decision for him to leave the Owls.

The 20-year-old managed to make a total of 21 appearances for the side before departing and while he looked fairly solid during those showings, he wasn’t getting many starts and decided the best port of call was to move away.

Instead of staying with Wednesday in League One then, the player bagged a move to SPL high-flyers Celtic. Having only made one appearance for them too though since the switch, he has now secured a loan deal to Motherwell for the remainder of the campaign.

Quiz: Can you name which club Sheffield Wednesday signed these 28 midfielders from?

That should allow Shaw to get more experience of Scottish football so that he can return to his parent club a better player than when he left. It will also allow him to get on the field more, with Celtic not able to currently offer him frequent minutes.

So far then, it has been the Owls where he has played most of his competitive football and it was at Wednesday where he came through the ranks – and the player has admitted to The Daily Record that it was a ‘hard’ call to leave Hillsborough.

He said: “I am a Sheffield lad. It’s been a big move for me but I have been really enjoying it so far.

“Motherwell is a big club and I want to get in as many games as I can here. That will go on to help develop me and hopefully I can help the club while I’m here too.

“It was tough to leave Sheffield and move all the way up here. Sheffield is all I’ve known so it was hard. But I thought the move was the best decision for my career.”

Shaw can certainly get more action now he is in Scotland and if he performs well at Motherwell, then he could get the chance to feature both at the top end of the SPL and even in Europe for his parent club next season.

The Verdict

Liam Shaw did manage to get on the field for Sheffield Wednesday but it was clear that he wasn’t going to be a regular performer in that Owls side.

It was arguably then the right call to leave for Celtic. The move represents the chance to challenge for titles and play in Europe and if he can get on the field and prove himself with the SPL giants, then it could land him an even bigger move in the future.

Whilst he hasn’t been able to break into the picture with Celtic yet, a move to Motherwell will certainly help him to develop and improve his chances of a first-team berth upon his return. For Sheffield Wednesday, they could arguably have used him in League One this season but they have recruited plenty of players to replace him.

That isn’t to say a move back to the Owls couldn’t happen one day, as the player himself is clearly passionate about the side. For now though, the two parties are better off separate.
