Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl will hold discussions with his squad on Monday as he makes his return to the club.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl will reportedly attempt to resolve his differences with his players next week as he resumes his role at the club.
That's according to Sky Sports, who claim that Rohl is preparing to hold "clear-the-air talks" with the Wednesday squad as he returns to Hillsborough following a summer of speculation over his future.
After a public dispute with owner Dejphon Chansiri in January, Rohl is believed to have informed the Owls of his desire to leave the club in April, and he has been linked with the likes of Southampton, Middlesbrough, Leicester City, RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen in recent months, but his high release clause has proven to be a problem for many of his suitors.
Amid what has been a nightmare summer for Wednesday, who are currently under three separate transfer embargoes and have been hit with a three-window transfer fee ban after failing to pay the wages of players and staff on time in May and June, Rohl did not report back for the start of pre-season training last month, and it was claimed that he was in talks with the club over an exit package.
In a surprise turn of events, it was revealed this week that Rohl will now return to the club, with the prospect of an immediate takeover said to have been a factor behind his decision, but that is not believed to have gone down well with some members of the Owls squad.
According to The Star, the "general consensus" among Wednesday's players and staff is that they would prefer Rohl not to return to the club as they feel that "too much has happened since the end of the season".
That seemed to cast doubt over whether Rohl would be able to come back to Hillsborough, but the latest update from Sky Sports has confirmed that the German will be present on Monday when the Owls squad return to their Middlewood Road training ground following a week at St George's Park.
Having missed the first two weeks of pre-season training, Rohl is "expected to speak candidly" to his squad about his situation, but he will reportedly not be given an "easy ride", with some players said to be "less than happy" about his decision to return after he actively sought an exit from the club over the summer.
Despite the potentially negative reception he may receive from the Wednesday squad, Rohl is believed to be "understanding" of their frustrations, particularly as many have not received their wages for two consecutive months, and at least seven players are thought to have given notice of their intent to terminate their contracts.
Rohl's return comes against the backdrop of some big takeover developments at the club, with journalist Alan Biggs claiming that an agreement with one party is "very close", while The Star report that Chansiri has accepted a bid for the club from an unnamed buyer, who are also willing to send a cash advance to help ease the club's immediate financial problems.
It is understandable that some Wednesday players have reservations about Rohl's return to the club, particularly as many of them decided to turn up to pre-season training, despite not being paid, while he elected to stay away.
Rohl's actions over the summer have been far from ideal, but with at least seven of the squad believed to have handed in their notices, it is difficult for them to be too critical of the 36-year-old for seeking an exit when many of them are currently doing the same.
Rohl certainly has plenty of bridges to build with Owls players and supporters, but he is undoubtedly an excellent manager at Championship level, and with a takeover seemingly drawing closer, it could be the perfect time for all parties to settle their differences as a new era at Hillsborough begins.
