With the exception of the Ballon d’Or defeat and the elimination from the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, 2021 was a splending year for Robert Lewandowski. Although team achievements wise it was not that better as in 2020, individually, every single award held his name.
Polish magazine ‘Piłka Noźna’ crowned the Polish striker with his very deserved award ‘Poland’s Footballer of the Year’ for the 10th time in a row. In an interview for the magazine, Lewandowski evaluates the importance of the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA Men’s Best player.
“I have come to the conclusion that the FIFA award does matter more than the Ballon d’Or. Only journalists vote in the latter”, he claims.
“Team captains, national team coaches, and the journalists can realistically and objectively evaluate our achievements, because they know how much each match, each record, each injury costs us.”
Lewandowski on Messi’s vote: “I have no regrets”
After Leo Messi’s heart-touching statements to Lewandowski at the Ballon d’Or gala, it looks like the words did not reflect well on his vote as Argentina captain for the FIFA Men’s Best Player. The Argentinian saw the likes of Neymar, Mbappe and Benzema in his top 3.
Lewandowski, however, doesn’t look bothered: “I voted for him because I appreciate what he did. I don’t know why his point of view changed, however, I have no regrets or complaints.”
“He made his decision, and I accept it. It was easier for me that I won the award anyway.”
