Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has said he ‘can’t promise’ that Florian Wirtz will not be sold to rivals Bayern Munich.

Wirtz has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s brightest talents at Leverkusen and was named as the German top-flight’s Player of the Season in 2023/24.

The 21-year-old scored 18 goals and laid on 20 assists in all competitions, as Leverkusen won a German league and cup double under Xabi Alonso.

Wirtz’s hat-trick against Werder Bremen sealed the title for Leverkusen, the club’s first-ever success and one completed without losing a single game.

European football’s elite are tracking his progress at the BayArena, with Bayern Munich having been public in their admiration of the player. Real Madrid, Barcelona and a host of Premier League teams have also checked in on Wirtz, who is contracted until 2027.

Leverkusen fans are fearful that Wirtz will be sold to Bayern and Carro has said he ‘can’t promise’ the transfer will not happen.

However, the Spaniard said Leverkusen will be reluctant to let leading assets join a direct rival. He pointed to the club holding firm in their valuation of Jonathan Tah in the summer, amid interest from Bayern.

“I can’t promise anything, you never know in football,” Carro said, in comments published by Fabrizio Romano, when asked if he could guarantee Wirtz would not be sold to Bayern Munich.

“But we don’t want to sell our best players to direct competitors, of course. It’s what we also told Jonathan Tah last summer.”
