Newly-appointed Les Bleues coach Hervé Renard reflected on the beauty of winning and the impact it can have on a country at the international level of football. In an interview with Téléfoot the Frenchman spoke of the experience of bringing joy to the nations he has already represented as head coach.
“What is most beautiful about winning is the day after,” Renard said. “I have experienced it on an African scale, in two different countries, across all generations. It brings everyone together through a national joy.”
Renard first gained recognition as the manager of the Zambia national team, leading them to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2012. His success continued as he went on to coach the Ivory Coast national team, winning the Africa Cup of Nations once again in 2015. This achievement made him the first coach to win the competition with two different teams.
Renard’s talent as a coach also earned him a spot at the 2018 World Cup with Morocco, as well as that historic win with Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup over the eventual winners of the tournament, Argentina.
