Manchester United usurped Real Madrid to sign Leny Yoro from Lille this summer, in what remains the most expensive transfer of the summer if all of the variables are fulfilled for the 18-year-old. One of the key factors was naturally the money involved.
Los Blancos thought they were negotiating from a position of safety, having initially convinced Yoro to join them, but could not find a deal with Lille when United came in with an offer of €50m plus more than €10m in variables for Lille. As per Marca, Yoro will earn €9m per year as a base salary, nearly four times the €2.5m that was on offer from Real Madrid.
Certainly whenever a player chooses another offer ahead of Real Madrid, the tendency has been to portray them as a mercenary. It is perfectly reasonable for a player to accept a much higher offer, but at United there is a good chance he wins a starting spot this season. At the Santiago Bernabeu, he would likely have begun as fourth-choice in the pecking order for Los Blancos, behind David Alaba, Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger.
