Leicester City had to endure a nail-biting second half before James Maddison sealed the tie in the 89th-minute to send the Foxes to the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over Burton Albion.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Youri Tielemans had given Leicester the lead within the first 20 minutes before Liam Boyce cut their lead in half seven minutes into the second half.

After the match, Foxes assistant manager Chris Davies was proud of their efforts as a combination of starters and youngsters did enough to get the job done.

“I think it was a good performance in general,” Davies told LCFC TV. “Obviously, from our point of view, the objective was to get through in the game, which we did.

“Full credit to Burton for their performance, they showed a good energy and spirit in the game and caused us problems at times.

“From our point of view, we could have scored more goals and been a bit more clinical with our attacking play. In general, we’re happy to go through.

“They pushed, and they pressed, and they played with a good intensity. We lacked a little bit of aggression in certain moments and they managed to get their shot off and score their goal.

“We always felt that we were going to create more chances and we did do that, but we weren’t quite clinical enough in those moments – either breaking away or when we had possession.

“When we could get control of the game, we were better, but full credit to Burton for their performance. We were the deserved winners.”

Leicester will find out their EFL Cup quarter-final opponents following the conclusion of Wednesday’s Chelsea – Manchester United match.
