Leicester City marked their return to Championship life with a dramatic 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The Foxes started brightly but found themselves behind midway the first half when Nathaniel Chalobah pounced in the box to put Wednesday ahead.
The visitors dug in and frustrated Leicester for the remainder of the first half, with goalkeeper Pierce Charles in fine form to deny Jordan Ayew, Abdul Fatawu and Jannik Vestergaard.
It took until the 54th minute for Marti Cifuentes’ side to break through - Jannik Vestergaard making no mistake this time, finishing smartly from close range after Bilal El Khannouss’ clever delivery from a set-piece.
From there Leicester pushed hard, peppering the Wednesday goal with efforts from distance and forcing a string of corners.
The game swung decisively in the 76th minute when Owls skipper Barry Bannan collected two yellow cards in quick succession for a late challenge, leaving his side a man short for the closing stages. The Foxes smelled blood, with Ayew, Patson Daka and Kasey McAteer all going close.
Just when it seemed Wednesday might cling on for a point, Wout Faes, who had only come on midway through the second half, rose highest at the near post in the 87th minute to head in El Khannouss’ corner.
Nine minutes of added time brought more Leicester pressure and more heroics from Charles, but the hosts saw it out, the final whistle sparking celebrations in the stands.
