Leicester City will host Sheffield Wednesday at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon in what promises to be an intriguing encounter, with both sides looking to start their Championship campaigns positively despite well-known off-field challenges.

The Foxes are preparing for life back in the second-tier following their Premier League relegation, while the Owls face an uncertain future amid ongoing financial turmoil that has left players unpaid and the squad very thin.

Ahead of the game, FLW takes a look at the players who are set to miss out on the action.

Victor Kristiansen

Left-back Victor Kristiansen will be a notable absentee for Leicester's Sunday fixture, having suffered a collision during pre-season training, according to manager Marti Cifuentes.

The 22-year-old Denmark international picked up the "unfortunate" knock - as described by Cifuentes - earlier this week, and has been ruled out of contention to appear against Wednesday.

Kristiansen was one of three defenders who missed the Foxes' final pre-season friendly. He arrived in the East Midlands from FC Copenhagen for a reported £17m in 2023, and managed 30 top-flight appearances last season.

Ricardo Pereira

Portuguese defender Ricardo Pereira, who has just been made the new captain of Leicester, was another to not feature against Fiorentina, as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury.

Pereira suffered a hamstring problem in November 2024 and was initially expected to be out for up to four months.

In his first Leicester City press conference, Cifuentes said that he thinks Perieira won't be out for a "long time."

Pereira's right-back counterpart, James Justin, was the third defender to not play in the Tractor Boy's final pre-season game - although he is fit to feature against Wednesday.

Abdul Fatawu (potential risk)

Winger Abdul Fatawu remains a doubt for the game, despite returning from the ACL injury that ended his 24/25 season early.

The 21-year-old Ghanaian suffered the knee injury while on international duty, but has made encouraging progress during pre-season - marking his return to the King Power with an incredible solo goal after coming on as a substitute.

Harry Souttar

Harry Souttar ruptured an Achilles tendon while on loan at Sheffield United last season, and was forced to return to the East Midlands for treatment after playing 22 times for the Blades.

He is not expected to be back in training until November.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid

Bobby De Cordova-Reid came back from injury to feature for Jamaica in the Gold Cup this summer.

However, the 32-year-old Foxes winger picked up another that will mean he's not expected to be available for the game against Sheffield Wednesday, as per Leicestershire Live.

Di'Shon Bernard

Reid's national team teammate - Di'Shon Bernard - is Sheffield Wednesday's only injury concern for the Leicester game, as per the club's official website.

Bernard is still out of the Wednesday playing picture after suffering a knee injury against West Brom last season. The 24-year-old had made 31 appearances for the Owls in 24/25 by that point.

Former manager Danny Rohl had suggested in April that Bernard might return by "August or September," which could mean Wednesday fans might be seeing him back in action shortly.

Barry Bannan

Wednesday's captain Barry Bannan's participation remains in doubt despite signing a contract extension last weekend.

Pedersen has admitted uncertainty over whether the 35-year-old midfielder will be available due to EFL restrictions imposed on the South Yorkshire club.

The Scotsman has certainly shown his loyalty during the Owls' darkest hour, choosing to remain at Hillsborough despite interest from elsewhere and the club's ongoing issues.
