Young Leicester City midfielder Kasey McAteer is set to join AFC Wimbledon on a loan deal before the transfer deadline passes later on this evening.

McAteer has been on the books at Leicester for several years, starting there as a kid, and he made his Premier League debut for the Foxes towards the end of 2021.

The 21-year-old is highly-rated by those inside the club, then, but he’s not quite yet ready for regular first-team football under Brendan Rodgers, and so a loan deal is set to be arranged.

Indeed, as per Football Insider, the midfielder will join AFC Wimbledon as they look to finish the Sky Bet League Two campaign in positive fashion, with the report revealing that the Dons have beaten several other EFL sides to his signature.

McAteer has been on loan at the likes of Forest Green Rovers in the past, and so is well-versed in the cut and thrust of EFL football.

The Verdict

This seems a move that makes sense for all parties.

McAteer should get to play more regularly at Wimbledon than he would at Leicester right now, whilst the Foxes get to see him develop and earn senior minutes and Wimbledon get a talented young footballer looking to press on with his career.

It’s a signing that should tick plenty of boxes.
