Leeds United have been linked with a move for Fenerbahçe winger Bright Osayi-Samuel, and former England and Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson has given his thoughts on the proposed move.

Reports from Turkey have suggested that Daniel Farke's team have made a £7 million bid for the Nigerian international, but that talks over a deal have been held off until the summer so that Fener can focus on their title race with bitter rivals Galatasaray.

Osayi-Samuel has made eight appearances for his country, and his contract with the Turkish club doesn't expire until the summer of 2025.

The 26-year-old has three goals and one assist in 16 matches in the Süper Lig so far this season, and he has already played at all three levels of the EFL across two stints with Blackpool, where he started his professional career, and with Queens Park Rangers.

The Whites paid £7 million, plus £3 million in add-ons, for Ethan Ampadu in the summer, and he has been a revelation for the team, but Robinson doesn't quite see the same in Osayi-Samuel.

Paul Robinson verdict on Leeds' Bright Osayi-Samuel bid

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, the pundit admitted that he feels the price that Leeds would be reportedly willing to pay would be a bit much from what he's seen.

"He’s a player many, like me, will know very little about," said Robinson. "You read about the transfer links but actually the opportunity to watch them in the Turkish league you don’t get a lot of those unless we’re covering games in European football.

"He’s a player I know very little about, £7million appears to be a big price tag for someone out of the Turkish league. You look at the quality Leeds have got in those areas, and going into the Premier League with an untried, untested player.

"If you’re going to be spending that kind of money, I’d much prefer it to be spent on Joe Rodon and guarantee you signings like that. I think if you’re taking an opportunity like that there has to be a lot of trust in your scouting network, there has to be due diligence done on players of that age and that quality.

"I think £7m, going forward, for Leeds with Premier League money, hopefully it won’t be the biggest transfer they do, but if they are looking to pay around that type of bracket for players, from a personal point of view, I’d like a little more tried and tested in a more difficult league. Not necessarily the Premier League because you don’t know how players can cope with the Premier League until they come into it, but a bit more quality at a higher level that would have an impact.

"Because a player like that, yes the reputation and potential is there, but does he immediately come into the side and take out [Wilfried] Gnonto, [Crysencio] Summerville, [Georginio] Rutter, [Patrick] Bamford? You would argue not.So, for Leeds to pay such a transfer fee, I would like to think it would be on a player that would have an impact on the starting XI."

Leeds would be taking a risk with Osayi-Samuel move

A case can certainly be made that the area of the pitch that Leeds are the strongest in is on the wings. They already have Summerville, Gnonto, Dan James, and Jaidon Anthony who can all cause problems from wide attacking areas. Unless Osayi-Samuel is going to be either the best or second best of that group, then £7 million does feel excessive.

He wasn't a blistering talent during his previous seasons in the EFL, and he's not been one of the top players in Turkey in the current campaign either. He ranks in the bottom ninth percentile of all players in the league for attacking contribution - non-penalty shots + open play chances created - as per The Analyst.

Based off the evidence that there is on him, buying the 26-year-old would be a complete punt.
