Leeds United: Update emerges on Jack Harrison's future as Everton eye bargain deal

Everton believe they can capture Jack Harrison from Leeds United in another loan move this summer, according to the latest update on his Elland Road future from The Mirror.

Leeds will spend the coming season in the Championship after missing out on promotion in the Championship play-off final to Southampton, meaning plenty of players will be leaving the club again this summer, including Harrison.

One of the big headaches for the club this summer will be maximising fees for unwanted players who remain contracted to Leeds. Harrison had success with the Whites previously, after he had three successive loans to Elland Road from Manchester City, the third of which contained an option-to-buy clause. That was reported to be worth around £11 million, which Leeds activated at the end of the 2020/21 season.

He continued to be a key player following Marcelo Bielsa's departure, but joined Everton in the wake of Leeds' relegation to remain a top-flight player, as he had a loan clause in his deal, like many others from last summer. The winger's future with the club looks all but over after he has been heavily involved at Goodison Park.

Many believed the Toffees would look to free up the funds for him, but if not, then there was always likely to be plenty of interested Premier League sides elsewhere. He scored four goals and notched a further three assists for Everton during the 2023/24 campaign.

During his time with Leeds prior to this season, he went on to make 206 appearances for the club in his five-year stint in West Yorkshire, scoring 34 goals and registering a further 32 assists in the process, but appears to have played his last game for the club.

When Everton signed Harrison on a season-long loan from freshly-relegated Leeds last summer, the deal was not thought to have included an option for them to make the deal permanent, hence fresh negotiations must take place. Harrison has four years left on his deal with Leeds until the summer of 2028, but Everton have been boosted by fresh reports surrounding the 27-year-old.

The Mirror are reporting that Harrison is scheduled to return to Leeds, but that it is likely he will depart for Everton, who believe they can re-sign the winger on another season-long loan:

"Everton feel they can take advantage of Leeds’ need to cut costs after missing out in Sunday’s Championship play-off final."

The Yorkshire Evening Post has revealed elsewhere that Max Wöber and Brenden Aaronson are not believed to hold the same option as Harrison in terms of a continuation of the loan clause, ruling them out of departing without a transfer fee, but it appears some of the clauses remain active following the Whites' failure to gain promotion back at the first time of asking.

The Daily Mail reported recently that the Whites may need to sell up to £100 million worth of players if they failed to win promotion, in order to comply with the EFL's financial rules.

Harrison has four years left on his deal with Leeds until the summer of 2028, and although he has had mixed form this season, he is one of the club's most saleable assets in terms of what it can do regarding rules and regulations for Profit and Sustainability and Financial Fair Play.

That means it will come as a blow to the Whites in not being able to cash-in. He may not be the flashiest player but has consistently reliable output for both goals and assists, although many Leeds fans felt they came in purple patches rather than a steady spread over the course of a season.

He took some time to get going at Elland Road, but became a reliable contributor as he developed each season under Bielsa, and is a player that Everton would be silly not to sign if it is just a loan that can also save them plenty of cash and resources to be put elsewhere.
