As is often the case for sides relegated from the Premier League, it was a turbulent summer for Leeds United.

The Whites saw several players depart, with many of them leaving on loan, much to the dismay of the supporters, as the club prepared for their new financial reality of life back in the Championship.

As well as reducing the wage bill drastically as players left on a temporary basis, the club needed some significant sales, and the big one came as Tyler Adams joined Bournemouth.

Naturally, rival clubs were hoping to poach others, but, to their credit, the Leeds hierarchy managed to retain several players, notably Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville.

Their resolve was really tested over the Dutch youngster by Burnley, as they made a £20m offer to bring the 22-year-old to Turf Moor.

Given he was relatively unproven at the highest level, that was a tempting sum, but Leeds stood firm.

Whilst Summerville didn’t push for a move like some of his former teammates, the chance to join Vincent Kompany’s side in the summer would have been appealing.

Having won the Championship at a canter, there was an expectation that the Clarets may be able to adapt to the top-flight with ease, and their attacking approach would be ideally suited to the forward.

Meanwhile, to some outsiders, Leeds were a club in a mess due to the high turnover of players and the change in ownership that summer. It may seem surprising now, but there were doubts about whether the Yorkshire side could bounce back straight away.

As mentioned, Summerville didn’t push to go, but we don’t know his true feelings about a potential switch. However, you can be certain that he is delighted he stayed at Elland Road.

The former Feyenoord youngster was always a player with talent but he has developed real consistency this season - scoring 15 goals and registering eight assists to help Leeds to the top of the Championship table.

Furthermore, Summerville has relished the additional responsibility that Daniel Farke has given him and he has become a leader on the pitch this term - scoring some crucial goals.

Burnley's Premier League campaign has been close to disastrous, as relegation back to the Championship seems inevitable, and many of the squad have seen their reputations suffer.

It’s pivotal that young players are given the right environment to show what they can do, and there’s no denying Summerville has benefited from a promotion chase with Leeds as opposed to a relegation battle with Burnley.

The next challenge for the attacker will be to show what he can do in the Premier League and there’s every chance he will get that opportunity with Leeds.

Already, there is talk about a potential switch for Summerville, with Chelsea believed to be admirers of the player.

But, last summer proved Summerville shouldn’t look to make that jump too quickly, and his only focus for the short-term should be helping establish Leeds back with the elite, as it's the perfect place for him to fulfil his potential.
