In a recent tweet, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that Leeds United are eager to seal a move for Newcastle United ace Paul Dummett on deadline day. It is understood that the Whites are facing competition from Ipswich Town in pursuit of the Welsh central defender this winter.
Dummett has struggled to earn regular playing time at St. James’ Park this season as he has often found himself on Eddie Howe’s bench. The Welsh talent has only featured in four senior matches for the Magpies during this campaign but is still waiting to score or assist a goal for them across multiple competitions.
The 32-year-old has proven his worth as a decent defender at the back by averaging 1.0 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per game in the League Cup. He has even distributed the ball accurately from inside his half after completing 89.3% of his attempted passes in the competition (stats via whoscored).
Dummett’s current contract at the Tyneside club will expire at the end of this campaign. Thus, it makes sense for Leeds to try and arrange a cut-price move for him soon.

Dummett is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch. The Welsh sensation is not shy about putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive. He is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
Dummett is primarily a central defender but can also play as a left-back if asked to do so. We can expect him to inject more bite and steel into Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke’s defence.
At 32, Dummett has only got a few good seasons left in him to play at a high level. Hence, he could be a good fit for the West Yorkshire club‘s needs in the short-term. Dummett has got the experience to help the Whites in their quest to earn a promotion back to the Premier League this season. Therefore, Farke should think about getting a deal over the line for him soon.
