The Athletic reported over the weekend that Leeds were looking to wrap up a deal for Monteiro ahead of the transfer deadline.

They now look close to landing the Portugal youth international and he is unlikely to be their only signing this week.

Juventus’ Weston McKennie is also close to joining the Whites, with Sky Sports reporting that the 24-year-old is set to have his medical today as well.

McKennie’s switch to Elland Road will see him link up with his USA team-mates Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson.

What has Tim Thornton said about Diogo Monteiro and Leeds?

Thornton has told GMS that Monteiro is on the verge of becoming a Leeds player.

On the Servette youngster, the Sky Sports reporter said: “I think Diogo Monteiro will sign. I think the plan is for him to have a medical today and that deal will get wrapped up. He’s a player that Leeds really like.

“He’s a young player, turned 18 over the weekend, so he will initially go into the under-21 set-up. But they really like him. They rate him highly.”

Who have Leeds signed in this transfer window?

Leeds signed Georginio Rutter and Maximilian Wober earlier this month, with the pair arriving to strengthen the team’s attack and defence respectively.

With the Whites just one point above the relegation zone, manager Jesse Marsch needed reinforcements.

Following his arrival at Elland Road, Rutter told LUTV: “I’m very happy to be here. The Premier League is the best league in football and with Leeds I hope the rest of this season will go good. I will give my energy for the club. I’m very energetic and dribbling is my favourite thing to do on the pitch.”

On his move, Wober said: “Coming now to Leeds, a club with such a big history and tradition, is definitely something special and was always a dream for me growing up – arriving at Elland Road feels amazing. Some of my biggest strengths are my personality and character. I’m never going to give up on the pitch.”

Marsch will now be hoping Rutter, Wober and McKennie can help keep Leeds in the Premier League, while Monteiro will be expected to make an impact in the future.
