Leeds United have reached an agreement in principle to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer following his exit from Everton.
The 28-year-old striker is expected to undergo a medical at Thorp Arch in the coming days, with the move set to be finalised shortly afterwards.
Calvert-Lewin has been without a club since confirming in June that he would leave Everton at the end of his contract. He spent nine years at Goodison Park after joining from Sheffield United in 2016, scoring 71 goals in 274 appearances.
Everton offered him a new deal last summer, but no agreement was reached.
In his farewell message, Calvert-Lewin described the decision to leave as ‘incredibly difficult,’ calling Everton his home since the age of 19 and thanking the club for helping him grow ‘both as a footballer and as a man.’
During his time at Everton, Calvert-Lewin established himself as a regular goalscorer and earned 11 caps for England, scoring four goals.
However, persistent hamstring and ankle injuries disrupted much of his career on Merseyside. Last season, he made 26 league appearances, starting 19 times and scoring three goals, while missing 15 matches through injury.
Leeds have been searching for additional attacking options ahead of their return to the Premier League after winning the Championship last season. Lukas Nmecha, signed from Wolfsburg earlier this summer, and Joel Piroe are currently the club’s only senior strikers.
The Yorkshire side had pursued Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz earlier in the window, but a £32 million bid was rejected and Atalanta have since moved ahead in the race for the Brazilian.
Reports suggest that Calvert-Lewin turned down a move to Sunderland before agreeing terms with Leeds. If the deal is completed in time, he could make his debut against former club Everton when they visit Elland Road on Monday evening.
Calvert-Lewin will become Leeds’ eighth summer signing, following Nmecha, as well as Thierno Barry, Mark Travers, Adam Aznou, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcaraz and Iliman Ndiaye.
The move represents a fresh start for a player who, at his peak, was among the Premier League’s most effective target men. Leeds will hope that with a clean bill of health, Calvert-Lewin can rediscover the form that once made him a key figure for club and country.
