Lecce Hand the Reins to Giampaolo After Gotti Dismissal

Lecce sacked Luca Gotti over the weekend after a relatively poor start and announced to have picked Marco Giampaolo as his successor on Monday. He’s returning to the bench after two years. He signed a contract until June 30th with an option in case he avoids relegation, the team announced.

The Salentini are third to last in the standings, although there are six teams within four points at the bottom of the table. They have tallied two wins, three draws, and seven losses so far. The hierarchy made the call following a one-one tie against Empoli. The squad showed decent fight late in the game, coming close to a late game-winner. The former Chelsea assistant landed the plane last year after inheriting a good situation as Roberto D’Aversa was fired for headbutting an opposing player.

Giampaolo takes over Lecce after last helming Sampdoria from January to October 2022. He had a strong second half of the season, finishing in 15th place. However, he commenced with two draws and six losses in the ensuing one, getting the boot.

The new Giallorossi gaffer managed Ascoli, Cagliari, Siena, Catania, Cesena, Brescia, Cremonese, and Empoli before his first solid stint with the Blucerchiati allowed him to reach Milan back in 2019. However, he lasted just seven matches on the Rossoneri bench. He guided Torino for 18 fixtures afterward, with meager results, before returning to Liguria.

Our Take on Lecce and Giampaolo

They could use somebody a little fierier, but it’s quite the risk given the completely opposite style compared to their last two bosses. A lot of things need to work out to be successful with proactive football down low. They might not have the squad to do it.
