Carlisle United are set to land a significant transfer coup by bringing in Crystal Palace forward John-Kymani Gordon for the remainder of the 2022-23 season.

As reported by Football Insider, the Cumbrians have fended off a whole host of interest for the 19-year-old, mostly from League One with MK Dons, Burton Albion and Lincoln City all keen to bring the teenager to their respective clubs.

Fourth tier high-flyers Leyton Orient were also interested, but it is Paul Simpson’s side, who currently sit fourth in League Two and seven points adrift of the automatic promotion spots, that are on the verge of signing the striker.

Kymani-Gordon has been plying his trade for Palace’s under-21’s side this season, scoring six times in 10 outings in the Premier League 2 competition – which included a hat-trick against Tottenham – and has also netted twice in three EFL Trophy matches against League One and Two opposition.

1. True or False – Bill Shankly played for and managed Carlisle?

True False

Despite being named on the bench by Patrick Vieira for five Premier League matches so far this season, the decision has been made to send Kymani-Gordon out on loan for the rest of the campaign, with Carlisle being the beneficiaries.

The Verdict

It is a fair distance for Kymani-Gordon to be moving compared to some of the other clubs interested in his services, so Palace must be very confident about Carlisle being the best place for him.

Carlisle have welcomed a lot of loanees through the door so far this season and have sent some back to their parent clubs, but they will be hoping that Kymani-Gordon can fire the goals in to push them closer to the top three.

The fact that he has featured in some Premier League matchday squads this season must mean that Palace see a bright future for him at Selhurst Park, but there is no substitute for regular minutes in mens football.

This could be the first step in the teen’s rise up the ranks, but there’s still no guarantee that he will be a success at Brunton Park.
