After two matchdays of rather routine results and the bigger sides largely all avoiding each other, that changed on week three.

The Eternal City duo of Lazio and Roma were at the centre of it, being handed difficult contests against Inter and Juventus respectively.

From the Giallorossi’s clash with Juve in Turin, they showed their resilience when, after largely being outplayed for the first hour and were fortunate not to find themselves more than 1-0 down, they struck in the third act for a share of the spoils.

Wouldn’t you know it too, Italy’s infamous law of the ex was on show as Paulo Dybala’s improvised, acrobatic assist set up Tammy Abraham for his first goal involvement since making the move south and send his side away with an important point.

“I told my players at half-time I was ashamed of them!” José Mourinho admitted afterwards when speaking to the media. “It wasn’t a tactical issue, it was their attitude. You can’t go to Juventus and play like that.

“We did absolutely nothing and were very fortunate it was only 1-0. It was a very different team in the second half and we deserved to win that 1-0 but the first half was terrible.”

In the opposite dugout, Massimiliano Allegri could have no complaints. He has been burned by the Portuguese tactician before in such circumstances. As such, the latest frustration didn’t come as much surprise.

“I remember a similar game against [his] Manchester United where we lost from two crosses after missing seven chances,” Allegri said in the mixed zone.

“You must kill Mourinho teams when you can. If they’re still in the game, they’re dangerous from set-pieces. They’re amazing.”

Equally amazing at the weekend were Roma’s rivals, Lazio, and their performance in clicking superbly in the second half against a tiring Inter side to fight back and claim a thrilling 3-1 victory over former coach Simone Inzaghi.

They were inspired by the star turn from the bench of Luis Alberto who showed that he still has so much to offer this team despite being benched for their first two games as he thrashed in a wonder goal to put the Aquile into a lead they never looked back from.

It ends Inter’s perfect start and is the second time under Maurizio Sarri’s stewardship that they have netted three times in a single game against the notoriously stingy defence of the Nerazzurri and afterwards, the man in charge suggested that he is now finally seeing serious positives in his squad.

“We’re now starting to give off the feeling that we can get through difficult moments in games unscathed,” Sarri told the assembled media. “Last year, we either dominated or struggled but now even when the team suffers, we’re organised and show our quality.”

It is rare that it happens but right now, there is little to complain about on either side of the capital.

But Napoli remain top of the table, even if their free-scoring start was halted in a scoreless stalemate against Fiorentina.

It simply had to be that Luis Alberto thunderbolt. The opposition, the occasion, the execution. It’s safe to say he sent a message to his coach.

Salernitana probably can’t believe their luck that they have a player in their ranks who just three months ago was netting in a Champions League semi-final. He was matchday three’s star of the show, scoring once and providing two assists in the win over Sampdoria.
