It has already a busy January transfer window for Wigan Athletic.

Sitting bottom of the Championship table, the Latics have brought in a number of new players to give newly appointed manager Kolo Toure the best possible chance of getting the club out of trouble.

Centre back Steven Caulker has joined on a deal until the end of the season, while midfield pair Miguel Azeez and Christ Tiehi have signed on loan from Arsenal and Slovan Liberac respectively.

However, it appears there is still more work to be done in the market at The DW Stadium, so we’ve taken a look at the latest transfer news emerging from Wigan, right here.

Gehardt race heats up

Earlier this month, it was reported that Wigan have made an offer to re-sign their former prospect Joe Gelhardt, on loan from Leeds United.

However, the Latics are far from the only club interested, and it seems they may be facing a battle for his services, with Blackburn, Sunderland, Swansea and Hull also said to be keen on bringing the 20-year-old back to the Championship.

Meanwhile, jounalist Alan Nixon has suggested that the Latics may struggle to afford the wages demanded by Leeds for the loan signing of Gelhardt, while Whites head coach Jesse Marsch has now revealed that discussions are ongoing over the striker’s future, but that a final decision is still to be made, meaning this may be one to watch for some time yet.

Vale targeted

One potential option to target for the summer transfer window that is already emerging at Wigan, is Chelsea winger Harvey Vale.

The 19-year-old is currently on loan at Hull City this season, but has made just three appearances for the Tigers this season, with journalist Nizaar Kinsella reporting that both Wigan and relegation rivals Huddersfield, had enquired about taking him on loan this month, amid an imminent recall from that stint at The MKM Stadium.

However, due to the fact that Vale has also featured in the EFL Trophy for Chelsea’s Under 21s this season, he is ineligible to play for another club during the current campaign, meaning any move made for him by the Latics, will have to wait until the summer transfer window.

Maamria comments on Adeboyejo links

Earlier in the window, it had been reported that Wigan are ready to trigger the buyout clause in striker Victor Adeboyejo’s contract with League One struggles Burton Albion.

The 25-year-old has scored 13 goals for the Brewers this season, so could provide some useful firepower, but it seems that so far, a move is in fact, not all that close to happening.

Commenting on those reports about Adeboyejo, Burton manager Dino Maamria revealed he had not been told about a club triggering the striker’s release clause, and that he had urged the player to remain at the club until the end of the season at least. With Maamria also indicating that Adeboyejo agrees with his suggestion, it seems this could be a tricky deal for Wigan to get done this month.
