But the gap to the play-off places has now opened up to seven points, giving some breathing room for the trio into the new year.

But the likes of Carlisle United, Bradford City, Swindon Town and Mansfield Town will be looking to close the gap to the automatic promotion places in 2023.

That quartet have competition of their own breathing down their necks, with everything still to play for in the second half of the campaign.

Here are all the latest League Two transfer headlines heading into the weekend…

Danny Johnson’s future update

Walsall manager Michael Flynn has responded to speculation surrounding the future of forward Danny Johnson.

The striker has 11 goals to his name this season, with the 29-year old being a key player in the side.

However, speculation persists that he may be set to depart the club having arrived on loan last summer from Mansfield Town.

Colchester United are reportedly interested in signing the striker, whose deal with Walsall runs until 15 January.

But Walsall boss Flynn has claimed that there has been no changes to their agreement with Mansfield, via Express & Star.

AFC Wimbledon Towler blow

According to London News Online, AF Wimbledon are set to lose Ryley Towler to Portsmouth.

The defender has made 17 appearances in League Two so far this season for the Dons.

But Bristol City have reportedly agreed a deal with Pompey to sell the 21-year old on a permanent basis, which will see him depart Plough Lane this month.

It was initially expected that Towler would remain with Wimbledon for the entirety of this season, but the deal with Pompey has scuppered those plans.

Stevenage sign Horgan

Stevenage have confirmed on their website the signing of former Ireland international Daryl Horgan.

The 2nd placed team in the division came to an agreement with League One side Wycombe Wanderers to sign the forward on loan until the end of the season.

Horgan has fallen down the pecking order at Wycombe having only started six league games all season, making a further five appearances from the bench.

The 30-year old will be hoping to turn his form around by helping Stevenage clinch automatic promotion to the third tier.
