It has been a fairly quiet start to the week regarding League One transfer activity, but as the weekend’s fixtures approach there are likely to be a lot of confirmed deals in the third tier.

The play-off chasing pack at this stage of the season probably still extends to the sides at the top end of the bottom half, and Peterborough United would have been delighted to get back to winning ways in Darren Ferguson’s first game back at the helm at Port Vale on Monday evening.

With that in mind, and the evenly matched nature of the division, any edge that is gained via January transfer window business could prove crucial come the end of the season, with fifth and sixth position still certainly up for grabs if Derby County pull away towards the leading trio of Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town.

Here, we have taken a look at the latest League One transfer news…

Robbie Burton

Portsmouth and Barnsley, along with Huddersfield Town, are interested in a January move for Robbie Burton according to Football Insider.

The 23-year-old has spent the first half of the season on loan at Sligo Rovers from Dinamo Zagreb, and has had his contract mutually terminated with his parent club, potentially accelerating a move this month.

The central midfielder came through the Arsenal academy and will be hoping to earn his first crack at the EFL.

Harry Charsley seals Vale exit

Newport County have signed Charsley on an 18-month contract on a free, with Port Vale agreeing terms to terminate the midfielder’s contract.

The 26-year-old had made just two league starts for Vale this season and will reunite with Graham Coughlan at Rodney Parade, having previously worked with the former Bristol Rovers manager in his time at Mansfield Town.

Darrell Clarke will likely be on the look-out for a replacement to replenish the depth that Charsley offered in the squad.

Sheffield Wednesday eye move for Luke McNally

Sheffield Wednesday have enquired about the possibility of taking McNally on loan from Burnley for the second half of the season, as per the Sheffield Star.

The ball playing centre back was mightily impressive in the second half of last season for Oxford United, after making the move from St Patrick’s Athletic this time last year, and could slot nicely into Darren Moore’s three at the back formation.

The Owls will be hoping to cement a place in the top two in the coming months, and with McNally struggling for minutes at Burnley a loan agreement does seem achievable at this stage.
