Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time penalty to give his side a first win of the season at home to Burnley.
It looked like it might be another one of those days for Manchester United exactly when they needed to bounce back from humiliation against Grimsby Town.
Although it took a stoppage-time penalty to earn the win, Ruben Amorim's side should have had the game wrapped up in the first 45 minutes.
The Red Devils started off well with a point to prove at Old Trafford. Mason Mount thought he had won his side a penalty after being bundled over by Kyle Walker only for VAR to intervene and rule no foul, when perhaps a foul outside the area may have been a more correct call.
Walker's foul that led to the opener was perhaps a far more unlucky decision, with the former Manchester City defender penalised for a tackle on Diogo Dalot.
From the resulting delivery, Casemiro headed on to the bar which bounced back off of an unsuspecting Josh Cullen with Martin Dúbravka unable to prevent the ball going over the line.
Amad Diallo should have made it 2-0 just before the break after linking up well with Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee – who came on a half into the game following Matheus Cunha's injury. Despite some quick interplay Mbeumo's pass for Amad bobbled with the winger then firing over the bar.
Burnley hadn't been a threat in the first half but equalised ten minutes into the second half when Lyle Foster finished off Bruun Larsen's ball.
However, United instantly scored from the restart. The ball was played back to Altay Bayindir who sent a long ball forward that Zirkzee headed down and Dalot pulled back for Mbeumo to finish.
When it comes to close offside calls there will be few closer than then when with just under an hour gone Foster was played through before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing. The assistant had put his flag up immediately but the replay showed there to be barely anything in the decision.
Scott Parker's team managed to get back on level terms though in the 66th minute when a long throw caused problems for the United defence. Bayindir's initial save bounced into the path of Jaidon Anthony who finished.
Despite having 25 shots as the game went on, it looked like United were set to drop points again. That was until VAR awarded a late penalty for a shirt pull on Amad that started outside the box and continued just inside the area.
Bruno Fernandes blazed over a penalty against Fulham last week but this time he made no mistake against his former team mate, slotting the ball into the corner to give Amorim's side a much-needed first win of the season.
