RB Leipzig travelled to the Weserstadion for their DFB Pokal semi-final tie against Werder Bremen and booked a spot in the final with a 2-1 win after extra-time.
Scorers: Bittencourt 105+1′; Hee-chan 93′, Forsberg 120+1′
RB Leipzig came out cracking and launched waves of attack to try and break the deadlock early but Werder Bremen had the best chance of the first half when Josh Sargent was one on one against goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi but put his chip inches wide.
Later, the hosts thought they had another great opportunity after being awarded a penalty but the decision was eventually overturned.
After the break, the visitors kept the pressure up but hit the woodwork twice. Jiří Pavlenka also saved Yussuf Poulsen’s point-blank header in the last second of regulation time.
Seconds into extra time, Hwang Hee-chan made it 1-0 for Leipzig but a defensive error let Leonardo Bittencourt chip the ball into the net from a tight angle to tie it with 15 minutes left.
Werder Bremen’s comeback couldn’t be completed as Emil Forsberg scored the winner for the visitors with about a minute left and penalties looming.
RB Leipzig will now face either Borussia Dortmund or Holstein Kiel in the final on 13 May.
