Lanús scored early on to shock the visitors, but River dominated the match otherwise, scoring a number of beautiful goals thanks to some fine team play.

River’s best performance of the season couldn’t have come at a better time, as they look to defeat Independiente in the Monumental Tuesday following a 0-0 draw in the first leg.

Though scoring goals was a major concern in August, where they involved in four-straight 0-0 draws, River have turned it around and scored 17 times in their last six matches.

In addition, River have only allowed three goals over that span. Lanús would score one of those to open the match in the 16th minute through some good fortune.

Lautaro Acosta whiffed on his initial attempt and scuffed his second shot as well.

However, the ball landed at the feet of Leandro Maciel, who slotted the ball home in the bottom corner.

Replays would show that he was in an offside position.

It only took 12 minutes for River to hit back with a well-worked equaliser. From a free-kick, Nacho Scocco cleverly turned and found the back of the net after a deft header from Nicolás De La Cruz.

The goalkeepers would have their say in the match, as they each would make beautiful saves to keep the score at 1-1 heading into the second half.

River would come out of the dressing room hungry and dominated the second half en route to a resounding victory.

They would complete their comeback thanks to a lovely buildup play and a fortunate bounce off the goalkeeper.

Santiago Sosa took a sweetly struck shot from about 22 yards out that hit ricocheted off the post and the goalkeeper’s back into the net.

Just five minutes later, Luciano Lollo extended River’s lead with a fantastic header off Juan Fernando Quintero’s beautiful free-kick.

It only took five more minutes for River to put the nail in the coffin. De La Cruz finished off a wonderful team move that he started to put the visitors ahead 4-1.

The barrage continued seven minutes later as it was clear Lanús were overmatched on the day.

Just four minutes after he was substituted on, Rafael Santos Borre found Exequiel Palacios alone in the box to extend the lead to 5-1.

Lanús fans have big reason to panic as they remain in 25th place in the 26-team Superliga and have taken just two points from their first seven matches.
