Frank Lampard insists Chelsea must still improve ‘off the ball’ despite the defensive ‘resilience’ shown during the midweek draw with Sevilla.

Chelsea‘s defensive strength has once again been questioned in the early weeks of the season following some error-prone league displays, conceding three times in disappointing draws with both West Bromwich Albion and Southampton.

The west London side conceded more goals than any other side in the Premier League’s top half last season and have already shipped nine goals in just five fixtures to date, though produced an improved defensive performance during a goalless draw with Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Ahead of tomorrow evening’s trip to face Manchester United, Lampard was pleased with his side’s ‘resilience’ at the back, though said that it would be too ‘simplistic’ to view the clean sheet as a good outcome, insisting his side still need to improve ‘off the ball’ as they go in search of improved solidity.

“I think keeping clean sheets always gives confidence and that’s great,” Lampard said at his pre-match press conference. “But it’s simplistic to say that because you conceded these things were wrong and because you kept a clean sheet it was all right. I’ve got to constantly analyse what is good and what is bad.

“Some parts off the ball against Sevilla was not as good as what I wanted it to be out.

“Defensively and resilience it was good, that really pleased me.”
