Another week in La Liga and another win for Girona. Almería took a 2-0 lead against the side from Catalonia on Sunday but within six first-half minutes, they led 3-2, and the score remained that way until the break. Girona added two more goals in the second half to win convincingly as they continue to bulldoze through teams. Míchel’s side are now joint-top of the La Liga table with Real Madrid on 25 points. It has been a remarkable season for a club that only got promoted to Spain’s top flight in 2022.
Sevilla drew 1-1 with Real Madrid on Saturday evening. Dani Carvajal equalised for Los Blancos shortly after David Alaba’s own goal gave the home side the lead. Sergio Ramos went close to scoring against his former side but Kepa kept the defender from Seville out. Unfortunately, Vinícius Júnior suffered more racial abuse during the game.
Sevilla released a statement about the incident, saying “Sevilla FC would like to communicate that, after detecting xenophobic and racist behaviour, a member of the public was identified, ejected from the stadium and handed over to legal authorities. The individual will also be subject to the club’s vigorous internal disciplinary protocols and have their membership revoked.
“Sevilla FC condemns all racist and xenophobic behaviour and will work closely with the authorities to ensure that action is taken accordingly. This behaviour does not belong at Sevilla FC.”
Antoine Griezmann went home with the matchball at Balaídos on Saturday night, scoring a hat-trick as Atlético Madrid ran out 3-0 winner. The French forward netted the opener from the penalty spot before adding two more to seal the victory for Diego Simeone’s side. Griezmann scored his second when he carried the ball from inside his own half before scoring with his right foot from inside the area. He later admitted that his intention was to cross, but the ball flew into the net to the delight of the travelling fans.
Marc Guiu scored the winning goal on his Barcelona debut on Sunday night. The 17-year-old came off the bench to score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Athletic Club. The victory moves the Blaugrana to within one point of Girona and Real Madrid at the top.
The last game of the gameweek was on Monday night, with Valencia beating Cádiz 2-0 at Mestalla. The win moves Los Che into eighth place in the table after 10 games.
