According to a report from SPORT, La Liga is once again considering hosting an official league match in Miami, and once again, Barcelona could take centre stage.
La Liga president Javier Tebas has reignited his idea of expanding the competition’s reach beyond Spain. While previous attempts to stage a La Liga fixture in the United States have fallen short, Tebas remains determined.
In a recent interview, Tebas made it clear that international growth remains one of his priorities.
“We have a commitment to play in Miami one day. We’ve discussed bringing big teams, like a Barcelona game against Atlético de Madrid. Now, we’ll see what the calendar allows, but the idea is to feature a top club,” he explained.
Currently, the first match under discussion for this overseas venture is Barcelona’s clash with Villarreal, scheduled for matchday 17 of the season.
That game is set to take place on the weekend of December 20 and 21, marking the final La Liga fixture of 2025.

At this moment, the plan is still in its early phases. Discussions have started, but no formal steps have been taken. However, the proposal fits into Tebas’ long-standing desire to boost La Liga’s global profile.
He is focusing on Barcelona because of their international appeal and has ruled out involving Real Madrid due to his strained relationship with club president Florentino Perez.
Villarreal is also seen as a strong option since they are participating in the Champions League this season. The schedule seems favourable too.
The week of December 15 to 21 does not include European matches, but the Copa del Rey round of 16 will be played between the 16th and 18th.
If La Liga proceeds with the Miami game, adjustments to the Copa fixtures will be needed to give both Barcelona and Villarreal enough time to travel and prepare.
Last season, Barcelona were close to playing a match in Miami against Atlético de Madrid, but despite both clubs agreeing, the plan fell through. This time, the league hopes things will be different.
