The first two months of the season (March & April), the newly acquired forward from the Columbus Crew was the main driving force on offense. Despite the 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year, Gabriel Pec, scoring the team's first goal of the season, veteran Christian Ramirez netted four goals in the team's first two months.
While the month of May featured seven games for the LA Galaxy, they struggled through their schedule only to find a small light at the end of their tunnel. The defending champions ended a 16-game winless streak when they beat Real Salt Lake, 2-0.
Reus came in clutch at the 70th minute of play on Saturday to earn his team a 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes. The last time that Reus scored prior to this game was when he provided both goals in the 2-2 draw against LAFC during Rivalry Week.
Yes. The LA Galaxy had a much lighter schedule in June. Instead of playing seven games, the team only had three (all on the road).
Unfortunately, they were shut out in the game against the Colorado Rapids. Otherwise, the Los Angeles Galaxy scored four times during that stretch. Reus either scored or assisted three of the four goals.
Reus accounted for 75% of the team's offense during the month of June. Considering the veteran midfielder has been playing more up top as of late, he's done rather well.
"Marco has been outstanding in these games. Again, I think as he feels -- he's just such an intelligent player. He is so just smooth and taking the ball under pressure in these games where teams are trying to match up one-on-one, he's good, his touch is soft, he uses his body very well to protect the ball... Again, as he's feeling good and getting into a rhythm with the group, I feel like his leadership and his quality has stood out for us."Greg Vanney, head coach of the LA Galaxy
In fact, the former Borussia Dortmund star was given the captain band for the first time ever with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Reus displayed a disciplined style of play, too. In the three June games, he did not commit a single foul. Instead, he was able to draw a foul in each of the last two games.
The 36-year-old soccer sensation has been consistent in that regard all season. He has only tallied three fouls this season as two came in the 3-2 loss against the Philadelphia Union.
Gabriel Pec did score twice on the road against St. Louis City SC. Had it not been for the LA Galaxy's inability to contain Joao Klauss, his hat trick would never have happened. His third goal tied the game up 3-3 costing the one-win team a second victory.
Matheus Nascimento was the other played to score in that one. The21-year-old Brazilian has been playing more as of late and that's been a good thing.
"I thought Nasci had a good game. Again, one of his best games I felt like he had year to date. Once again, San Jose in our place, a lot of one-on-one matchups, him against their middle centerback. He showed moments of strength and held up play. He shows he can scoot in dynamic and run into some spaces and make it difficult. I think he showed all around all the different qualities he has and that he brings to our group."Greg Vanney, head coach of the LA Galaxy
The first-year MLS player had one of the team's two assists in the win over RSL. He followed that up by netting a score against St. Louis City.
Yet, no one else comes close to the level that Reus has been playing at. When healthy, the German footballer has shown he still has it.
