LA Galaxy Player Ratings vs San Jose Earthquakes

Article image:LA Galaxy Player Ratings vs San Jose Earthquakes

After a sad and disappointing loss, we look at how the players did in last night’s, California Clásico. Who played really well and who struggled to fit in? We’ll try to be optimistic and try to find the positives when grading everyone’s performance.

Grading Scale

The grading scale goes from 0 as the worst possible performance to 10 as someone’s best possible performance. If a player was assigned a 5, they would be considered mid or decent. The grade is based on how they impacted the game and their overall contribution to the team. Remember, judging a player is always difficult because you aren’t in their shoes. This grade is purely based on the spectator’s point of view.

Individual Ratings

Dejan Joveljic 8/10 – Dejan was obviously the best player on the field yesterday. Joveljic scored 2 goals and was the biggest threat up top all night. His finishes were clean unlike the rest of his teammates. It’s simple! Find Dejan Joveljic in the box and he can finish.

Rayan Raveloson 7/10 – Rayan Raveloson did a lot of the work last night. He did the work that Mark Delgado usually does. I’m impressed by Rayan stepping up in Delgado’s absence and taking charge of the midfield.

Douglas Costa 6.5/10 – I was very skeptical of what Costa was going to come back from suspension as. He was used as a substitute and played the full 2nd half. Costa looked a lot quicker and had a few dangerous shots that almost curled in. He was quiet towards the end but still gave this team a boost off the bench.

Chase Gasper 6.5/10 – Raheem Edwards struggled in the first half forcing Vanney to sub on Chase Gasper. Gasper may not have provided that much offensively but was solid on the defensive end.

Kevin Cabral 6.5/10 – Cabral came on and immediately provided an assist to Dejan Joveljic to start the comeback. He had 2 simple chances to put away inside the penalty area but couldn’t get any power behind them. I also will point out his work ethic on the defensive end. It’s non-stop! I liked what I saw from the Frenchman.

Daniel Aguirre 6/10 – I thought Aguirre played pretty well and moved the ball up the field with no problem. Aguirre just lacks that lethal ability in the final third. In Vanney’s system, he expected his midfielders to be able to take on defenders and create. Even with that criticism, the 19-year-old played very well in his 69 minutes.

Derrick Williams 5.5/10 – Williams was the best overall defender last night. His teammates put him in some predicaments with their bad errors.

Samuel Grandsir 5/10 – Grandsir was very aggressive last night. However, with the referee calling a tight game, he would pick up a yellow card early. I expect a little more recognition from Grandsir so he doesn’t get booked in the 33′ minute. He had some good runs forward but couldn’t finish them off.

Julian Araujo 5/10 – Julian gave up the penalty and was pretty tame going forward last night. I need better from the All-Star fullback.

Efrain Alvarez 4.5/10 – Alvarez had some nice moments but couldn’t turn those moments into serious chances. Whether it’s releasing the ball quicker or putting the shot in the bottom corner, Efra struggled. It was frustrating to watch him miss sitters and lose possession easily. I will give him credit for his confidence to take on defenders but the final product after is subpar.

Sega Coulibaly 4.5/10 – Sega had an awful pass and was caught out of position on the 2nd and 3rd San Jose goals. Those are 2 huge errors that put this game away early on.

Raheem Edwards 4.5/10 – Raheem has confused me over the past couple of games. He has been doing way too much offensively and gifts opposing teams chances. He has to realize that if he loses the ball, the opposition has a simple counterattack. Raheem Edwards wasn’t up to standard tonight.

Victor Vazquez 4.5/10 – I liked how Victor Vazquez played in some moments however he did not break down the defense. He was playing as that creative midfielder, but failed to create in the first half.

Jonathan Bond 4/10 – 3 Goals were conceded. I don’t know if any of the goals were his fault but getting a hand on one of those would’ve been nice.

Sacha Kljestan 4/10 – The MLS veteran did not have a good appearance off the bench. His slow, short passing wasn’t what the Galaxy needed against the active San Jose midfield.

Regardless of this loss, it is not time to panic. I saw a lot of things I liked from this performance. There are just a few mistakes that are heavily costing this team time and time again. The team will travel to Colorado this weekend for a chance to redeem themselves.
