Last December, the Los Angeles Galaxy wasted no time in making adjustments to their 2024 MLS Cup championship roster. General manager Will Kuntz called Nashville SC and sent a key player their way in return for a veteran player.
Thursday was a busy day for several teams in Major League Soccer as the second transfer window officially closed. Many deals and swaps were made.
The LA Galaxy traded midfielder Gaston Brugman to Nashville for Sean Davis. The deal was not only the catalyst for more trades, but the six-time MLS Cup winners virtually got nothing out of the deal, as the team eventually released Davis before the season started.
Since then, Dejan Joveljic, Marky Delgado, and Jalen Neal have all been traded. The LA Galaxy traded a second MLS Cup Finals MVP in the same year when they dealt John McCarthy to the New York Red Bulls for a third-round pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.
This week, Kuntz made another call to Nashville SC's front office. This time, they told them to keep a player already with them on loan.
Sticking with the theme of twos, trading with Nashville twice and trading two MLS Cup Finals MVPs, the Los Angeles Galaxy moved on from a second player named Jonathan on Thursday.
Though the spelling is different, the blow to fans is about the same.
"We are excited for Jonny as he furthers his career in MLS. The goal of the LA Galaxy player development pathway is to develop first-team professional players. While we always want our academy players to be Galaxy players for life, we are thrilled that Jonny has found an opportunity to continue his professional development and play first-team soccer in MLS. Jonny will always be a part of the LA Galaxy family, and we proudly wish him all the best."Will Kuntz, GM of the LA Galaxy
The Los Angeles Galaxy will receive $1.5 million from Nashville SC. The deal is comparable to the one involving Joveljic. The LA Galaxy sent him to Sporting Kansas City for a fee of $4 million.
Pico Rivera, California native made a bigger splash in the sport with the Los Angeles Galaxy's second unit. With Ventura County FC, Perez recorded 11 goals and 14 assists (25 goals contributions) in the 53 appearances he made.
Perez has played internationally for both the United States and Mexico. He officially joins Nashville SC permanently as they are embarking on a top seed in this year's MLS Eastern Conference playoffs.
