A shock twist has emerged in the transfer saga of Kylian Mbappe, who is reportedly reluctant to commit his future with Paris Saint-Germain.
L’Equipe (h/t Marca) reports that Mbappe has informed Les Parisiens that he will not activate his one-year extension until 2025, meaning that he will become a free agent in 12 months.
PSG want to avoid such a scenario and are ready to part ways with him this summer to extract a transfer fee.
PSG’s Qatari owners, who previously cited Mbappe as the leader of the project and were determined to keep him at all costs, are now ready to move on from the French superstar.
Mbappe enjoyed a breathtaking 2022/23 campaign, racking up 41 goals in all competitions for PSG. He also finished as the Golden Boot winner at the 2022 World Cup.
Real Madrid have been perennial admirers of Mbappe, coming close to signing him in 2022 before Mbappe snubbed them at the last moment.
While it left a bad taste initially, Los Blancos have maintained their interest in the 24-year-old.
It has been rumoured that Madrid would move for Mbappe next summer, but his latest decision may prompt them to alter their plans.
Madrid are actively looking for a successor to Karim Benzema, and Mbappe would be a perfect fit.
Mbappe’s potential departure means there is plenty of work to do for football advisor Luis Campos, who is already working on a replacement for Lionel Messi.
Neymar has also been linked with a move away from the French capital following constant criticism from fans over his injury problems and attitude.
