KV Mechelen have announced the signing of Ryan Teague. The Socceroos’ midfielder leaves Melbourne Victory to join the Belgian Pro League side on a deal that will run until 2028, with an option for Mechelen to extend this for a further year. The club, in their statement announcing the signing, said they beat the likes of Gent and Wrexham to the signing of Teague.

According to Mechelen, they were able to convince the player to join because of the clubs ambition and project. However, one could argue that both Gent and Wrexham’s current projects may be more ambitious than Mechelen’s. The club can certainly offer him the best chance of extended playing time however, and with a World Cup coming up, that is clearly something Teague should be thinking about if he wants to be part of the Socceroos’ squad for the tournament.

Teague, on paper at least, looks to be a solid bit of business for Mechelen. The 23-year-old midfielder had a brief spell in Portugal a few seasons ago but has since been playing for Melbourne Victory in the A League. Over the past two season he has played 59 games for the club, scoring six goals and providing five assists.
