Ajax hosted NEC Nijmegen in Amsterdam on Sunday and held on to all three points after grinding out a 1-0 win.
Scorers: Kudus 52′
It was one-way traffic in Amsterdam, but Ajax were forced to hold their breath across 90 minutes before scraping by NEC.
The reigning title holders maintained 67% of the ball and had 19 shots compared to nine, but the visitors’ defence frustrated the hosts.
Sitting 0-0 at the break, John Heitinga side had to come out into the second half with another game plan in mind, and the efforts of an in-form Mohammed Kudus redirected Dusan Tadic’s cross home for 1-0.
He now has 16 goals for the club in all competitions and is also creeping up the Eredivisie scoring charts.
The likes of Steven Berghuis and Steven Berwijn also impressed for the hosts but struggled to find the net.
It’s three vital points for the Dutch giants and they kept pace with current leaders Feyenoord and are only three points off top spot.
