After 16 years of absence in the Premier League, Leeds United kickstart their top-flight camp in the toughest way possible, as they travel Anfield to face Liverpool on Saturday. The Whites have proved themselves to be a sturdy bunch, and things could be infinitely trickier against the reigning champions of England, who are hungry for all three points after losing the Community Shield to Arsenal.

Defence

Leeds United have a fully fit defensive unit, with even new signing Robin Koch returning safely from the international break. The German international could, in fact, make his competitive debut for the Whites this weekend, featuring at the heart of the four-man backline.

Unfortunately, Marcelo Bielsa will not be blessed by the presence of Ben White this time around. So Koch will have to remain content with the services of captain Liam Cooper in central defence.

Elsewhere in defence, Luke Ayling is the undisputed first-choice right-back for Leeds United, having become a key component in Bielsa’s tactical setup. The same applies to Stuart Dallas, who is more than likely to get the nod ahead of Barry Douglas on the opposite flank.

Meanwhile, Illan Meslier might be rewarded with his last season’s performances with a start in goal, ahead of the experienced Kiko Casilla. It will be interesting to see how the Frenchman performs at the highest level of football.

Midfield

Kalvin Phillips struggled with injuries during the backend of last season. But, the midfielder is raring to go, having recently made his England debut during the international break. He is a guaranteed starter in the number six role.

Bielsa has some decisions to make in the advanced midfield roles, with Tyler Roberts pushing for a place in the starting lineup. However, the Argentine is likely to go with Mateusz Klich and the experienced Pablo Hernandez.

Pascal Struijk is another player who has been doing well during the pre-season, but he is unlikely to be risked in such a big match.

Attack

Rodrigo Moreno is pushing for a start after joining from Valencia earlier this summer. But having just returned from the international break, he might start on the bench instead, allowing Patrick Bamford to spearhead the Leeds United attack.

The ex-Chelsea starlet will be supported by the wide offensive duo of Helder Costa and Jack Harrison, with Ian Poveda and Ezgjan Alioski serving as potential alternatives.
