The Bundesliga season continued this afternoon with two games taking place.
Here’s how it all unfolded.
Edin Terzić made 10 changes to his Dortmund side ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg, but his players didn’t let him down as they thrashed Augsburg to head to Paris on a high.
Scorers: Moukoko 4′, 29′, Malen 20′, Reus 34′, Nmecha 64′; Vargas 32′
Roared on by the Signal Iduna park faithful, Dortmund took the lead after just four minutes when young striker Youssoufa Moukoko found the back of the net from a yard out, setting the tone for the game.
Donyell Malen headed in a second before Moukoko somehow found the back of the net once more from a corner, all within the opening half hour.
It didn’t stop there. Augsburg thought they had found a way back into the game moments later when Ruben Vargas converted, but Dortmund hit straight back through veteran Marco Reus, restoring their three goal lead heading into the break.
After a spell of pressure from the visitors to begin the second half, Dortmund put the game beyond doubt just after the hour mark by adding a fifth goal, courtesy of Felix Nmecha. The German midfielder found himself on the end of a Reus cutback and coolly stroked the ball into the corner from the edge of the penalty area.
With the writing on the wall, the second half lacked any real intensity and was punctuated by substitutions at regular intervals.
Dortmund have already confirmed their Champions League place for next season, but closed the gap on fourth placed RB Leipzig with a win, while Augsburg remain marooned in midtable.
Elsewhere in Germany, Bayern Munich found it much tougher going against third placed Stuttgart.
Scorers: Stergiou 29′, Jeong 83′, Silas 90+3; Kane 37′ [Pen]
The German giants, who also rotated their squad ahead of their Champions League second-leg, fell behind after half an hour when defender Leonidas Stergiou ran onto a lobbed pass before deftly lifting the ball over the onrushing Manuel Neuer.
But they found a way back into the game from the penalty spot, with Harry Kane dispatching the ball past Alexander Nübel from 12 yards for his 36th Bundesliga goal of the season to ensure that they were level heading into the break.
But Stuttgart remained the better side, spurning several good opportunities to take the lead in the second half. But, seven minutes from time, they deservedly took the lead when substitutes Jeong and Silas combined, allowing Jeong to head home from a metre out for his first goal of the season.
As the Bavarian giants pushed for an equaliser, they were hit again as Silas added a third in stoppage time.
Though Bayern and Thomas Tuchel understandably had their minds focused elsewhere, it is a loss that leaves them looking nervously over their shoulders as their opponents closed the gap to just two points with two games left to play.
Should they manage to overturn the deficit, it would be the first time since 2011 that Bayern have finished outside the top two in Germany.
