Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have reportedly decided that their ‘new priority’ is to sign a ‘left-sided centre-back’ before the summer transfer window closes.

The Premier League giants have spent over £100m to bolster their midfield with the additions of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo.

But following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, Liverpool remain in the market for one more midfielder and they are being heavily linked with Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure.

Liverpool are still looking to strengthen in other areas, though. It has consistently been reported this summer that they want to sign a young centre-back who can compete with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate but they are yet to get a deal over the line.

Micky van de Ven was on their radar before he signed for Tottenham Hotspur, while they have been linked with Goncalo Inacio, who has recently penned a contract extension at Sporting Lisbon.

Despite these setbacks, Football Insider are reporting that ‘Klopp and Liverpool will turn their attention to signing a new left-sided centre-back after sealing a deal for Endo’ and this is their ‘new priority’.

A separate report from Football Insider claims Liverpool are ‘well placed’ to sign Schuurs from Serie A outfit Torino.

The 23-year-old impressed for the Italian side during his debut season in 2022/23 and it’s recently been reported that Tottenham are ‘planning’ to sign Schuurs before the transfer window closes.

But Football Insider are of the understanding that ‘Schuurs could come back on the radar at Liverpool as they search for centre-back reinforcements’. The report adds.

‘Football Insider revealed on Friday (18 August) that the Reds will now prioritise a deal for a left-sided centre-back after signing defensive midfield star Wataru Endo from Stuttgart. ‘They have, however, already lost ground in the pursuit of some of their top targets – with Micky van de Ven joining Tottenham and Goncalo Inacio penning a new deal with Sporting CP. ‘Schuurs, who came through the ranks at Fortuna Sittard, is seen as a realistically priced option for the Merseysiders. ‘It is believed he will cost Jurgen Klopp’s side around £30million as the 1 September deadline rapidly approaches. ‘He has not yet made his senior Netherlands bow but received his first-call up in 2020. Nonetheless, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Liverpool captain and countryman Virgil van Dijk is “well aware” of his talents and is a “big fan” of Schuurs.’
