“I’m happy with the strength and quality of my squad but we have injuries. Now it’s a question how long the players will be out. There are different solutions. One is the transfer market but that only makes sense for the right player.

“At the moment, all of our solutions are in the squad. Naby [Keïta] will be back for Monday and Kostas [Tsimikas] will train for the first time today. I understand the questions about transfers but at the same time I don’t because if there was the right deal, we would have done it already.

“We aren’t being stubborn. People think we’re lacking a specific kind of midfielder but if the right player and opportunity was there we would have done it. We’ve had a lot of conversations already and it doesn’t look like something will happen.

“Thiago’s injury is not good. I read it would be four to six weeks [out of action] – I would prefer four!”

On attitude against Fulham

“We addressed it after the game. We had a slow start and I didn’t like it. I saw an attitude to fight back but it’s better to have intense and concentrated start. It took too long to switch on. We had to fight back and momentum was with Fulham.

“How do we fix it? That’s easy, a silly question – we don’t start slow!”

On Darwin Núñez and Mo Salah partnership

“It’s a cool one, definitely. They are both determined to score and be in decisive areas.

“Mo is in a really good moment and Darwin is still settling in. The attacking area wasn’t our problem last week.”

On Roberto Firmino

“He’s very important. We couldn’t find him properly against Fulham and there were different reasons for that which was nothing to do with us. The central area was often blocked.

“It isn’t easy for an offensive player to play in those conditions. I don’t judge him on one or two games. He had a good pre-season but not a perfect one. He’ll definitely benefit from it though.”

On Harvey Elliott’s new deal

“He’s a super player. He had a really good pre-season which helped him a lot and he’s always in my plans.”
