Leicester City shared the points with Ipswich Town during the top of the table Boxing Day clash, but the game wasn't without controversy.

Ipswich's home form of nine wins and just a solitary loss from 11 games prior to the game was mirrored by Leicester's away record, and the festive meeting of first and second was the standout clash of the Boxing Day fixtures in the second tier.

Sam Morsy's deflected strike handed the home side a fortuitous draw at Portman Road after Stephy Mavididi put the Foxes ahead in the first half.

He scored with a lovely curled finish midway through the first half in front of a packed out crowd in what was the sides' first meeting since 2014.

A deflected Leif Davis shot in the 65th minute was the first effort the Tractor Boys managed on target, in a cagey game where clear openings were few and far between.

Ipswich's Conor Chaplin then had a chance punched away by Mads Hermansen with the score still at 1-0 but controversy soon followed.

Leicester were frustrated to see their penalty appeal waved away late on when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall appeared to be fouled and knocked over by Cameron Burgess in the area.

That moment would prove to be pivotal, as Leicester failed to survive a late Ipswich onslaught, with Morsy rescuing a point with a shot that deflected twice on its way into the net.

It appeared to be heading wide but hit Ricardo Pereira and Jannik Vestergaard before beating Hermansen.

The draw means the Foxes remain six points clear of Ipswich, but with third-placed Southampton cutting the gap to second to five points after their 5-0 thumping of Russell Martin's former side Swansea City.

Dewsbury-Hall reacts to penalty incident

The Leicester City midfielder took to Twitter (X) to voice his frustrations surrounding the penalty incident, which could have won the away side the game, had it been given.

"We are all humans I get that but decisions like that need to be correct in crucial points of games. Ah well."

Enzo Maresca's reaction

The Leicester City boss told BBC Radio Leicester: "I'm not disappointed, to be honest. Overall I'm quite happy.

"Playing every three days with the same intensity is not easy, so we knew that at some moment in the game we could drop a little bit.

"In the first half we created three or four clear chances, and scored a goal. In second half we had some moments and the moment of the penalty [appeal], that for me was crucial.

"Then the last 10 or 15 minutes we conceded the control of the game to them."

Ipswich vs Leicester verdict

The penalty claim was the turning point, as it proved to be the catalyst for Ipswich's late resurgence.

The Tractor Boys had been nullified by Leicester to a large extent, despite good territory, but ended the game well after surviving that scare.

It looked like a penalty and Leicester will rightly feel aggrieved. However, a point helps both sides in their long-term quest for automatic promotion.
